James C. Shuman is Associate Professor of Education and Chair of the Department of Education at St. Lawrence. He is Coordinator of the University’s Teacher Education Program, and advises students both on the undergraduate and graduate levels, teaching courses in teacher education, curriculum development, and educational leadership. Shuman’s resume covers a 40-year career in education, including high school teaching, working as a museum educator, and teaching in colleges and universities; he joined the St. Lawrence University faculty in 1989. He received MS and Ed D degrees from West Virginia University and a BS degree from Carleton College in Minnesota.

In his career at St. Lawrence, Shuman has served on the executive boards of the New York Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the New York State Association for Teacher Educators, including two terms as president in the 1990s. He currently serves as Co-Editor of the Journal for the Practical Application of Constructivist Theory in Education (JPACTe), an electronic publication of the Learner-Centered Resource Collaborative coordinated by St. Lawrence University, Niagara University, The Institute for Learner Centered Education, and the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York State. Shuman also serves as Steering Committee Chair for the University’s annual North Country Symposium devoted to the economic, environmental, and educational vitality of New York State’s North Country region.

In 2003, Shuman was recognized by the New York Association for Colleges of Teacher Education with the Charles D. Mackey Award for Service to Education in New York State. With his wife, Lauren Buys Shuman, Dr. Shuman was ordained as an interfaith minister in 2000 through the New Seminary in New York City; he and his wife provide interfaith services to individuals and couples in New York’s North Country region.
